Today marks a yearlong celebration of a Black press giant

When a young, Black man named Robert S. Abbott began to continually publish the Chicago Defender on May 5, 1905, he labeled it "the World's Greatest Weekly" newspaper.

One century later, the Defender continues to maintain its place as one of the nation's most influential Black newspapers.

At a 10:30 a.m. news conference today, Defender executives will officially kick off a yearlong celebration at the paper, featuring a variety of public events, as well as 10 special centennial news editions.
