Jan. 22--The government's decision to impose surcharges on steel imports would benefit only a handful of steel producers but hurt local steel users, say members of the House standing committee on economics.
The committee suggested other steps such as industrial standard requirements or import restrictions to protect local steel manufacturers.
Steel users had complained earlier to the committee, chaired by Democrat MP Juti Krairiksh, that the import surcharges would raise their costs.
